From tomorrow there will be no requirement in England to wear facemasks indoors, socially distance or have limits on the number of people meeting. Dubbed “Freedom Day”, July 19 will see a huge reopening of the UK’s economy as Boris Johnson seeks to establish post-Brexit Britain as an influential global player.

Now North Rhine-Westphalian minister Joachim Stamp is urging Germany’s politicians to follow suit.

The deputy prime minister and family minister in North Rhine-Westphalia said there should soon be more freedom in Germany as life returns to pre-pandemic norms.

He told BILD am Sonntag: “In the next eight weeks, all adults will have received an offer to get vaccinated.

“In children, we have almost only cases that are harmless.

“Therefore, the day of German unity, October 3rd, this year could also be the day of freedom and personal responsibility.

“All restrictions should be lifted, everyone should be responsible for themselves.”

Before that date, Mr Stamp said that all large spectator events should be open to those who have been vaccinated and who have recovered.

The FDP politician said: “For the Bundesliga kick-off, people only have access with proof that they have been vaccinated or have recovered.

“That could also apply to festivals, concerts, the village fair or marksmen’s festivals.”

The outspoken politician also called for restrictions on children and young people to be lifted.

He said: “The constant scare tactics now harm our children more than the pandemic.”

Outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been savaged in recent weeks by many of her countrymen for not relaxing the rules fast enough.

German newspaper BILD slammed the politician for travelling to the UK to meet Mr Johnson even though she banned German fans from watching their country take on England in Euro 2020 last month.

In an editorial it raged: “Thousands of Germans would also like to fly to London to support the national team in the European Championship game in London against England on Tuesday.

“But they are not allowed to, because the British stipulate a ten-day quarantine regulation upon entry from Germany, which you can shorten to five days with a negative test.

“Therefore there is not enough time for German football fans.”

The newspaper added that Ms Merkel was able to travel to the UK because “special rules apply to political delegations”.
