In an interview with Fox News, the ex-President described the Taliban as “great negotiators” and warned Joe Biden has humiliated America more than any other Commander-in-Chief. The 45th President said: “What happened and what is happening in Afghanistan is unbelievable and we’re being set up by very tough people that are very great negotiators.”

Mr Trump added: “I’ll tell you what, they are automatically great negotiators who have been fighting for a thousand years and everything about them they negotiate.

“We are being set up and in a certain way I guarantee you they consider them to be hostages and let’s see what happens over the coming weeks.”

Despite Mr Trump’s claims, it is broadly recognised the Taliban have existed for decades rather than centuries.

The former President went on to warn Americans that events in Afghanistan would not go away but did not claim the withdrawal itself was negative.

He said: “This is not a story that ended today or yesterday, this is a story that’s going to go on for a long time, and it could be a very, very bad ending.

“It’s a great thing that we’re getting out but nobody has ever handled a withdrawal worse than Joe Biden,” he said.

Under the Trump administration, a deal was made with the Taliban in February 2020 to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan in exchange for security guarantees.

However, the 45th President continued to use his TV appearance to fire broadsides against his successor in the White House, who he accused of presiding over “the greatest embarrassment in the history of our country”.

Trump even said events in Afghanistan were much worse than Jimmy Carter’s Iran hostage crisis.

He said: “I don’t think in all of the years our country has ever been so humiliated.

I don’t know what you call it – a military defeat or a psychological defeat, there has never been anything like what’s happened here: You can go back to Jimmy Carter with the hostages.”

He also suggested Saigon was less humiliating than the Kabul evacuation.

“I looked at that big monster cargo plane yesterday with people grabbing the side and trying to get flown out of Afghanistan because of their incredible fear – and they’re blowing off of the plane from 2,000 feet up in the air, nobody has ever seen anything like that.

“That blows the helicopters in Vietnam away.

“That is not even a contest. It has been the most humiliating period of time that I’ve ever seen.”

The ex-President, who is rumoured to be considering a re-run in the 2024 election, appeared to connect Biden’s failure in Afghanistan with domestic issues in America, including the US-Mexican border.

He said: “I never saw anything so stupid in my life until the last few days with Afghanistan, that blows the stupidity of the southern border away.”
