President Joe Biden has suffered a blow with the latest poll showing his popularity has dropped to an all-time low of just 50.4 percent. The devastating results come in tandem with a rising disapproval rating, which stands at 43.6 percent – the highest during his presidency so far.

Polling aggregator FiveThirtyEight has been updating the president’s popularity rating based on regular polling.

Mr Biden has seen his approval rating stay lower than that of former president Barack Obama, and well below John F Kennedy and Jimmy Carter at the same point in their terms.

And Americans are concerned about a range of factors, with the coronavirus pandemic, economy and vaccination rates key elements in their confidence in the president.

The USA has seen the biggest jump in inflation in more than a decade, with rates at 5.4 percent over a year.

There has also been a shortage of workers following the pandemic, with available jobs soaring to 10.1 million in June according to Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey.

This means job openings are currently exceeding the number of Americans looking for work.

Nick Bunker, director of research at the Indeed Hiring Lab told Insider: “Employers’ demand for workers is incredibly strong. But at the same time, labour supply is, at least for now, not that abundant.

“Whether this level of tightness will continue depends on whether demand can stay this high and how quickly workers will return to the labour force.”

FiveThirtyEight’s poll aggregation took the opinions of  6,607 US adults across five polls conducted between July 31 and August 8.

In the CNBC All-America Economic Survey of 802 American adults, 48 percent approved of the job Biden is doing as president, which was up a point from the first quarter.

However, the President’s disapproval rating increased to 45 percent from 41 percent.

When it came to Mr Biden’s handling of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, his approval dropped nine points to 53 percent.

And despite the President promising a “summer of freedom”, a YouGov poll found 38 percent of Americans think the pandemic will “get worse” instead.

The YouGov poll also found more than 60 percent of Americans know someone who has caught coronavirus, and the Delta variant worries 59 percent.

When it comes to the future of the USA, 53 percent of Americans believe the country is currently on the wrong path.

In terms of economics, the new President’s rating dropped by four points to 42 percent.

Jay Campbell, a partner at Hart Research Associates and Democratic pollster for the survey said: “I think it all comes down to COVID.

“If the COVID situation had continued to improve the way it was improving in the first quarter, all of these numbers would look very different.

“And ultimately, someone has to be responsible for that. And right now it’s Joe Biden.”

Confidence is lowest among independent voters, who had helped the President achieve full control in the White House and both chambers of Congress.

One poll undertaken between July 31 to August 2 found 44 percent of independent voters approve of Mr Biden and 49 percent disapprove.

Since April, the president’s net approval rating has dropped 18 points with independent voters.

However, the overall picture for the economy is somewhat positive, with wages rising by four percent last month compared to 2020.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic shut businesses and saw more than 22 million jobs lost, nearly 17 million have been recovered.

This does leave a deficit of around 5.7 million jobs, and there’s not enough encouragement to work according to some.

The US’s generous unemployment benefits are being blamed for not encouraging those out of work to seek jobs.

And to further complicate matters the coronavirus pandemic is still raging across the country.

On average there are 75,000 new cases reported every day, which has increased significantly from the 12,000 a day in June.

The Delta variant – which is highly contagious – has been spreading across the United States – with 50.8 percent of the population doubly vaccinated.
