Written CV’s are dreaded by most job applicants and recruiters alike, whether it be trying to finding the content or having to comb through countless applications. As CEO of recruitment company Inspiring Interns Ben Rosen put it: “It’s an analogue tool in a digital world.”

In the modern visual workplace, it’s become more and more difficult to connect with people through the written word, especially when hiring for client-facing roles.

“We find that you’re twice as likely to get a job if somebody gives us a video as well as a CV.

“A video CV opens the door and gets somebody in the room, gives them an opportunity to have an interview,” said Mr Rosen.

“Because everybody has smartphones, anybody can make a video CV.”

A video CV is around 30 seconds to one minute in length and accompanies a normal CV when applying for a job.

This recruitment tool not only makes your application stand out more, it streamlines the recruitment process for the company as well.

From confidence to passion, there are many things that can’t be put on a CV, some due to the limits on wording or pages and others simply because they can’t be showcased through written word.

“If you’re really passionate about something it’s quite difficult to get it across on a CV,” Mr Rosen commented.

“Communication is 91 percent tonality and nine percent content but it’s very difficult to stress tonality on a CV.”


By giving this extra information and exposure, companies can grasp a better idea of whose CV they are actually looking at before the interview stage.

“It can also give them an opportunity to see what they’re like, how they speak, how they smile, how they look.

“Not in terms of being great clothes but in terms of are they professional, do they want them to represent their business.

“A lot of these people are going to be speaking with the company’s clients over Zoom or over video so it’s really important for them to come across well over the video.”

“Would they be a good representative of the company?” Mr Rosen concluded.

With all this being said, video CV’s are a foreign concept for many people, so what exactly goes into them?

Making a video CV

Don’t talk about what’s on your CV, remember that this is accompanying it and it’s your chance to stand out so talk about what you wanted to but couldn’t include on your written application.

Dress professionally and be confident.

Showcase your passion, strengths and motivations.

Ensure the place you are filming in is quiet, without an echo and has relatively good lighting.

Speak clearly and concisely, for some it will be easier to create a script but this is not a necessity if you don’t feel you need it.

Video CV’s should generally only be 30 seconds to a minute in length.

Mr Rosen added: “What we also encourage people to do is just be themselves, just talk for a minute and smile.”
